Why Tile Size Really Does Matter and How to Choose the Right One for Your Home

Not long ago, we visited a client in the Cotswolds who was choosing between large 600 x 300mm wall tiles and smaller 200 x 100mm patterned tiles for a bathroom. On paper, both were lovely but the impact on installation was very different.

The larger tiles offered a clean, modern finish with far fewer grout lines, creating a smooth, seamless look on the walls. They did, however, require the walls to be beautifully flat and well-prepared to ensure the tiles sat perfectly. The smaller tiles would have added decorative character, but needed more cuts, more grout and considerably more time to achieve a crisp, even layout.

In the end, the client chose the larger tiles for that sleek, low-maintenance finish and after preparing the walls properly, we installed them in a layout that felt balanced, refined and perfectly suited to the space.

It’s a great example of how tile size isn’t simply a design decision; it’s a practical one too.

Cutting, Waste & Planning

Tile size affects how much cutting is needed and in turn, waste, labour time, cost and design flexibility. Larger tiles generally mean fewer cuts but each one must be handed with care. Smaller tiles often need more cuts, especially in older homes where walls aren't perfectly straight.

The size choice also matters long after the installation is complete.
